Edexcel IGCSE Chemistry Past Papers

The Pearson Edexcel International GCSE in Chemistry (4CH1) is a linear qualification that began first teaching in September 2017, with first examinations in June 2019. The assessment consists of two externally-assessed written papers that must be taken in the same series at the end of the course. Paper 1 is a 2-hour examination worth 110 marks (61.1% of the total grade) that assesses core content. Paper 2 is a 1-hour and 15-minute examination worth 70 marks (38.9% of the total grade) that assesses all content, including more in-depth topics marked with a ‘C’ reference. Both papers include multiple-choice questions, short-answer questions, calculations, and extended open-response questions. Calculators are permitted in both examinations.

The content is organized into four main topics: Principles of Chemistry (covering states of matter, atomic structure, bonding, and chemical calculations), Inorganic Chemistry (including group properties, reactivity series, and chemical tests), Physical Chemistry (covering energetics, reaction rates, and equilibria), and Organic Chemistry (including hydrocarbons, functional groups, and polymers). The qualification aims to develop students’ knowledge of chemical facts and concepts, practical and investigative skills, and prepare them for further study in chemistry. Students will learn to apply principles to different contexts, evaluate information, and develop problem-solving skills. The qualification is available for examination in November and June series.

Modular

The Pearson Edexcel International GCSE in Chemistry (Modular) (4XCH1) will begin first teaching in September 2024, with first examinations in June 2025 and first certification in August 2025. This qualification has a modular structure with two mandatory units that can be taken in any order or re-sat. Each unit is assessed through a 1 hour and 40 minute written examination worth 90 marks, with each unit contributing 50% of the total International GCSE grade. Both exams include multiple-choice questions, short-answer questions, calculations, and extended open-response questions. Calculators are allowed in both examinations. The units are available in both June and November exam series.

The content is organized into eight main topics spread across the two units. Unit 1 covers Principles of Chemistry (Part 1), Inorganic Chemistry (Part 1), Physical Chemistry (Part 1), and Organic Chemistry (Part 1). Unit 2 covers Principles of Chemistry (Part 2), Inorganic Chemistry (Part 2), Physical Chemistry (Part 2), and Organic Chemistry (Part 2). The qualification aims to help students learn about patterns in chemistry, gain knowledge of chemical facts and concepts, develop practical skills, analyze data, and prepare for advanced courses. Students will learn to apply principles to different contexts, evaluate information, and develop problem-solving skills. The modular structure offers flexibility, allowing students to sit exams when they’re ready and providing opportunities to resit individual unit assessments before receiving their final grade.
