The Pearson Edexcel International GCSE in Further Pure Mathematics (4PM1) is a linear qualification first taught in September 2017, with first examinations in June 2019. The qualification consists of two externally assessed papers, each contributing 50% to the total grade. Both papers are 2-hour examinations worth 100 marks each, and must be taken in the same series. The qualification is offered at Higher Tier only, targeting grades 9-4 (with grade 3 allowed). The content is organized into three main areas: Number (using numerical skills mathematically and in real-life situations), Algebra and Calculus (setting up and solving problems, manipulating expressions, and using graphs), and Geometry and Trigonometry (understanding shapes, vectors, coordinate geometry, and trigonometry). The content extends beyond regular International GCSE Mathematics, making it suitable for students whose mathematical competence has developed early or who wish to pursue further interest in mathematics.
This qualification provides significant learning benefits, including developing students’ ability to use numerical skills in both pure mathematics and real-world contexts, building competence in mathematical expression manipulation, and establishing a solid foundation for progression to AS and A Level mathematics. The assessment objectives focus on demonstrating knowledge of pure mathematics techniques (30-40%), applying mathematics to solve complex problems (20-30%), and writing clear mathematical solutions (35-50%).
There’s more than one qualification for this subject i.e., Further Pure Mathematics (2017), Further Pure Mathematics (2009). All the question papers with mark scheme are now available.
