The Pearson Edexcel International GCSE in Human Biology (4HB1) was initially taught in September 2017 with first exams in June 2019. This is assessed by two externally-marked written exam papers, each counting for 50% of the overall grade. Paper 1 and Paper 2 are 1 hour and 45 minutes in length and each is 90 marks. Exams consist of multiple-choice questions, short-answer questions, calculations, and longer response questions. Calculators can be utilized by students during both exams. The papers are available for November and June examination series.
There are 12 topic areas that the course deals with: Cells and tissues, Biological molecules, Movement of substances into and out of the cell, Bones, muscles and joints, Coordination, Nutrition and energy, Respiration, Gas exchange, Internal transport, Homeostatic mechanisms, Reproduction and heredity, and Disease. This qualification is designed to teach students about the human body systems, practical science, and foundation for subsequent advanced biology studies or careers in medicine, dentistry, physiology, genetics, and epidemiology. The course consists of practical investigations that lead to developing experimental techniques that are tested through written exams. The qualification is marked on a nine-point scale from 9 to 1 with the highest mark awarded as 9.
