IGCSE Linear Mathematics is a new qualification first taught in September 2023, with first examinations in May/June 2024. It is designed for post-16 students who achieved a grade 4 or above in GCSE Mathematics but aren’t continuing with A level Mathematics.
The assessment structure consists of two equally weighted papers, each worth 80 marks and lasting 1 hour 40 minutes. Paper 1 covers statistical techniques, finance, and mathematical modelling, while Paper 2 focuses on algebra, graphs, and problem-solving. The content areas include statistical problem solving, probability, linear programming, sequences and growth, finance, graphical methods, and algebraic techniques. Linear Mathematics helps students develop skills in mathematical reasoning and problem-solving that are valuable for further study in subjects like psychology, geography, business, and economics. It also builds confidence in applying mathematics to real-world scenarios and prepares students for the quantitative demands of university courses and employment.
Modular Mathematics is a new qualification starting in September 2023, with first exams in May/June 2024. It’s for students who got a grade 4 or above in GCSE Mathematics but aren’t taking A level Mathematics. The course has three units, each worth 60 marks and tested in a 1 hour 20 minute exam. Unit 1 covers data analysis and probability, Unit 2 focuses on algebra and graphs, and Unit 3 deals with financial and numerical problem solving. Each unit makes up one-third of the total grade. The content includes topics like collecting and analyzing data, working with equations and graphs, and solving money-related problems. Modular Mathematics helps students get better at using math in real-life situations, which is useful for many jobs and college courses. It also builds skills in logical thinking and problem-solving that are important in fields like business, psychology, and geography.
There’s more than one qualification for this subject i.e., Mathematics A (2016), Mathematics A (2009). All the question papers with mark scheme are now available.
