Edexcel IGCSE Physics Past Papers with Mark Schemes [PDFs]

The Pearson Edexcel International GCSE Physics has two versions. The current one (4PH1) has two papers covering eight topics. The new modular version (4XPH1) started in 2024 with two equal units covering nine topics. Both teach physics theory and hands-on skills.

Pearson Edexcel International GCSE in Physics (Linear) (4PH1)

Edexcel IGCSE Physics Past PapersThe Pearson Edexcel International GCSE in Physics (4PH1) started first teaching in September 2017, with first examinations in June 2019. The assessment includes two papers: Paper 1 (2 hours, 110 marks, 61.1% of the qualification) covers core content, and Paper 2 (1 hour 15 minutes, 70 marks, 38.9% of the qualification) covers all content including more in-depth topics marked with ‘P’. Both papers include multiple-choice questions, short-answer questions, calculations, and extended open-response questions, and calculators are allowed in both exams. The exams are available in November and June.

The content is divided into eight main topic areas: Forces and motion, Electricity, Waves, Energy resources and energy transfers, Solids, liquids and gases, Magnetism and electromagnetism, Radioactivity and particles, and Astrophysics. This qualification helps students develop important skills like solving problems, applying physics concepts to different situations, developing experimental skills, and analyzing data. It prepares students for further study in physics at Advanced Level or for careers in science-related fields. The course focuses on both theoretical knowledge and practical skills, with experimental activities embedded throughout the content to help students understand real-world applications of physics.

Pearson Edexcel International GCSE in Physics (Modular) (4XPH1)

The Pearson Edexcel International GCSE in Physics (Modular) (4XPH1) will start first teaching in September 2024, with first examinations in June 2025 and first certification in August 2025. The assessment consists of two equally weighted units (50% each): Physics Unit 1 and Physics Unit 2. Each unit is assessed through a 1 hour and 40 minute written examination worth 90 marks, featuring multiple-choice questions, short-answer questions, calculations, and extended open-response questions. Students can use calculators in both exams. The modular structure allows students to take unit assessments in any order and provides opportunities to resit individual units before receiving a final grade.

The content is divided into nine main topic areas: Forces and motion, Electricity, Energy resources and energy transfers, Solids/liquids/gases (Parts 1 and 2), Waves, Magnetism and electromagnetism, Radioactivity and particles, and Astrophysics. Unit 1 covers the first four topics while Unit 2 covers the remaining five. This qualification helps students develop important skills including applying physics concepts to different situations, developing experimental skills, and analyzing data. The course prepares students for further study in physics at Advanced Level or for careers in science-related fields. Students learn both theoretical knowledge and practical skills, with experimental activities embedded throughout to help understand real-world applications of physics.
